Його бив і показував за гроші на ярамарку жорстокий негідник, користуючись його абсолютною беззахисністю і лагідністю. Доктор Трівс побачив виродка і вирішив зайнятися ним. Він привіз його в лікарню, і з часом науковий інтерес змінився щирою жалістю і співчуттям. Джон Меррік не був ідіотом, він умів читати і писати, був розумним і духовним, але невиліковним, його залишили в лікарні назавжди. Так як про історію нещасного дізналися сильні світу цього - сама королева благословила рішення комітету лікарів.
